Nowadays it is very important to make sure that your website or your client’s website is on page one in Google. If you are on page 1 and you aren’t in the top 3, then it’s going to be a challenge for you to get clicks through organic search.
One of the ways to ensure that you will get a good boost in Google and other search engines like Bing or Yahoo is to make sure that your on page SEO is sound. What is on page SEO? It involves a few things.
The title of each page should be relevant to the content that it contains. It should also include keywords that may be searched for. For example, if you are trying to get traffic for the key word “black Persian kittens” then you want to make sure you have this in the title. You could put something like “Pretty black Persian Kittens Go for a Ride” or something like that. You can play with the title as much as you like, but not too often. You should see what works best with your title and also consider trying to mix in a few other keywords that might help you rank as well. Getting as much keywords in your title without making it look spammy would be the best scenario.
You also want to make sure that you don’t use the same title over and over again. Vary the titles even if the articles are similar. Remember that title tags should also be H1 tags as they are commonly known as. When you use wordpress, the title you enter automatically becomes an H1 tag.
When it comes to SEO, one of the most important aspects of getting your site ranking points towards the URL of the page. Remember, Google ranks pages, not websites. SO, you want to make sure that your url structure is sound.
You will want to make sure that you do not over-optimize your url. For example, if your website is BlackKittens.com and you want to create a page about black kittens, do not use a structure like this – blackkittens.com/blackkittens. Instead you should choose something else that would still describe what your page is talking about. The other option is to silo the page section where you can group similar pages altogether. Google likes silo structure and can rank these pretty well.
Make sure that in your description you also work in some other keywords. You can use your main keyword here but you should also try to inject some other keywords that will make sense. To find some keywords you can use the Google Keyword Planner to find some keywords that get traffic but are also similar to the target keyword that you are trying to rank for.
Your description that is displayed in Google will either be the first paragraph in your article or it will be what you have in a plugin such as Yoast SEO. There you can enter a description with your keywords. Caution though, Google won’t always use this but instead may use the first part of the article. So, in order to counter this make your meta description and your first paragraph similar, but not the same. That way they are both optimize so whatever google chooses to use it will help with your rankings.
Other Things That Help
Besideds title, url and description, you also need to look at the content on a webpage. Is the content relevant? Is the content original? Are the articles at least 400 words? When you look at all these factors together and make sure they are all congruent, this can only help with your rankings.
